DO I NEED A BUILDING PERMIT?  WHEN?

 

 

 

STATE BUILDING PERMITS

Any work done on a commercial building or facility, or in a local commercial zone, in the City of Roundup requires a building permit from the State of Montana. The current State Building Inspector for this area is Kerry Preston, Big Timber, MT at 406-439-3579 or at mtblginspct@mtintouch.net.

FIRE MARSHALL

Building projects related to those businesses that include beer, wine or liquor sales, public housing, healthcare, etc., usually will be inspected by the State Fire Marshall's office. The local area inspector is Sally McKenna at 406-896-4388. The State Fire Prevention and Investigation office is 406-444-2050. A quick check with either office can clarify the need for permits or special rules. 

 

HEALTH & SANITATION PERMITS

In addition to the above described permits, health and sanitary issues and permits are handled through the Health District office in Lewistown. Such permits may be required for restroom facilities, food services business, special events, wells, septic tanks, etc. The current contact for the Health District is Dean Pomeroy at 406-535-7466.

 

CITY OF ROUNDUP PERMITS

The City of Roundup requires a Site Permit for any change in the size of a structure, any new structure and/or all fences. No local permit is required to replace roofing, siding, windows, doors, etc., on residential structures. Permits can be obtained from Monty Sealey at the Roundup City offices; telephone number 406-323-2804.

 

It should be noted that normally, when a business is sold, or changes ownership; also when a building is occupied for a change in the historical use, new codes may apply. Contact should be made to the permit providers prior to the change.

 

 

 

DOES THE CITY OF ROUNDUP HAVE A ZONING ORDINANCE?

 

Yes, the City has been zoned since 1979. The ordinance was fully reviewed and amended in 2004.

DOES ROUNDUP PARTICIPATE IN THE FEDERAL FLOOD INSURANCE PROGRAM?

 

Yes. In fact both the City of Roundup and Musselshell County participate in the federal flood insurance program. Both have adopted a Floodplain Ordinance that complies with the federal requirements.

DO I NEED A BUSINESS LICENSE?

 

No person who conducts business in the City of Roundup is required to obtain a local business license, unless the business includes the sale of beer, wine and/or liquor. A quarterly liquor license is required within the city limits. Licenses can be obtained at the Roundup City office at 34 3rd Ave. West. (406-323-2804)

DO I NEED AN ASSUMED BUSINESS NAME, D.B.A.OR FICTITIOUS BUSINESS NAME?

 

If your business name is anything other than your surname, your business is required to be registered with the state. Should you accidently "infringe" upon another business name you could face legal action. Registering is done through the Montana Secretary of State at www.sos.mt.gov.  

 

 

IS THERE A SIZE LIMIT FOR MY GARAGE?

 

The maximum size for a garage in an area zoned Residential is 1200 square feet. Garage size in other zoning areas are subject to state building codes.

 

 

IS IT SAFE TO DRINK THE WATER?

 

Municipal water for the City of Roundup comes from an abondoned mine shaft, south of the Musselshell River. Because of the source, it tends to be highly mineralized and less than pleasing asthetically. It is, however, safe to drink. Those on restrictions for high sodium in their diets should be aware of the relatively high sodium content.

 

Roundup water is chlorinated. It is check for chlorination levels daily. Monthly samples are taken and sent to a certified lab for bacteria tests. Periodic other test are performed throughout the year to ensure the integrity of potible water safety.

 

The asthetic, taste and smell issues are related to the relatively high levels of iron, manganese, sulphates and sodium.

 

It should be noted that the City of Roundup is a member of the Central Montana Regional Water Authority. The Water Authority is pursuing a long term solution to availability of higher quality domestic water for the town. Current projections anticipate a new, high quality water source providing water to Roundup within the next 5-6 years. www.centralmontanawater.com

 

 

IS THERE A LEASE LAW FOR DOGS IN ROUNDUP?

 

Dog owners are required to license their dogs annually. A vaccination certificate is required to get a license.

 

The local dog ordinance states, "Dog owners are hereby forbidden to keep any dog within the city limits that has not been prpoerly registered, licensed and vaccinated as prescribed in the forgoin sections; or allow their dog to run at large, or to keep or harbor any dog which by barking, howling, chaing vehicles or pedestrians, or in any other manner causes annoyance or disturbances to any person or person in this city."

 

The City also restricts citizens to no more than two (2) dogs per household within the city limits.

 

 

WHO OWNS THE SIDEWALK IN FRONT OF MY HOUSE?

 

In most areas of town, the sidewalks are public and owned by the City of Roundup. It is the adjacent property owner's responsibility to maintain the condition of their sidewalk and keep them free of debris, snow, etc.
