The Roundup Area is historically part of the central Montana oil scene. The first discovery well for oil in Montana was approximately 15 miles north of town. Oil drilling and oil field competion and service companies still reside in the area.

Signal Peak Coal Mine-Surface Facilities Near Roundup
Roundup was a very important coal mining area from the beginning, supplying coal for the railroad system that used to pass through the valley. Today, more than one substantial coal mine development is proposed or in progress. The Signal Peak Coal Mine Project is permitted and mobilizing about 17 miles south of Roundup. RAILROAD SPUR CONSTRUCTION
Early Rail Spur Site Work Near Broadview
Railroad spur construction from Broadview to Signal Peak Coal Mine began the week of
August 11, 2008. The rail spur will be used to haul coal by unit train from the mine to market.
Construction took about 12 months and the construction project could employ about 100 workers. The spur line is approximately 33 miles long. Construction was under the direction of Ames Construction; Billings office telephone of 406-252-4803.
