ROUNDUP COMMUNITY PROFILE
INTRODUCTION
Old Roundup started as a stage stop between Lewistown and Billings in 1882, with a log building store and saloon, located about 1.5 miles southwest of the present City of Roundup, just across the Musselshell River. Present Roundup started in 1908 when the Milwaukee Railroad came through. Coal development began in the Fall 1907 with first production in the Fall of 1909. Coal production, which saw a peak of 550 miners employed, was largely halted in 1956 after a long history of labor disputes. Montana’s first oil discovery was in Devil’s Basin just north of Roundup in November, 1919. Sporadic oil development continued until WWII, after which oil began to replace coal in the labor market for Roundup. Oil and agriculture continue today as staples of the economy.
